One manuscript, formatted for every edition

Formatting turns your finished manuscript into files a printer and an eBook store can accept. We build each edition from the same clean source, so your paperback and eBook always match in content.

Formatting is where a finished manuscript becomes a book someone can actually hold or download.

Overview

Where formatting fits in publishing

Formatting comes after editing and proofreading and before upload. It is less about visual design and more about building technically correct files. A print edition is a fixed set of pages with exact measurements, while an eBook is a flexible file that reshapes itself for each screen. The two need different preparation, even though the words are identical.

Start here if you are not sure what you need. Some authors want only an eBook, others need a paperback, hardcover and EPUB together. We look at your manuscript and your publishing plans, then recommend the right combination of print-ready and eBook formatting and quote for exactly that.

Every genre has its own visual language. We design within it, so the right readers recognize your book at a glance.

Why it matters

What you gain with book formatting

Formatting turns your finished manuscript into files a printer and an eBook store can accept. We build each edition from the same clean source, so your paperback and eBook always match in content.

01

A single clean source

We first tidy your manuscript into one consistently styled file, removing stray spaces, manual breaks and mixed fonts, then generate every edition from it to keep them aligned.

02

Right file for each format

Print editions get a fixed-page PDF built to trim size and margins. Digital editions get an EPUB that reflows properly. Neither is a careless conversion of the other.

03

Clarity on what you need

If you are unsure whether to start with an eBook, a paperback or both, we explain the trade-offs for your book and budget before recommending anything.

04

Ready for your platforms

Files are prepared to the specifications of platforms such as Amazon KDP and IngramSpark, which you upload from your own accounts, with our help if you want it.

How it works

Four clear steps

  1. 1

    Assess the manuscript

We review your file, note images, tables or special formatting, and ask which editions, trim sizes and platforms you plan to use.

  2. 2

    Clean and style

Your text is stripped of hidden formatting problems, and every heading, paragraph and scene break is given a consistent named style.

  3. 3

    Build each edition

From that styled source we build the print PDF and the EPUB separately, each following the rules of its own format.

  4. 4

    Check and deliver

You review the print proof and eBook preview, we apply corrections, and you receive final files ready for upload.

FAQ

Questions about book formatting

Ask us something else

Interior design decides how the pages look: typefaces, chapter openers, ornaments. Formatting builds technically correct files for each edition. Simple novels can often be formatted from a clean standard template, while books that deserve a distinctive look benefit from full interior design first.

A Word document works best, though we can take exports from most writing apps. What matters more is that the text is final. Formatting before editing and proofreading usually means paying for changes to be reworked into the files later.

Usually, at least in part. Hardcovers often use a different trim size, and printers may set different margin and page requirements for case-bound books. The interior design can stay the same, but the file is rebuilt to each specification.

Not exactly, and it should not. Readers change font size and screen orientation, so an eBook cannot keep fixed page breaks or running heads. We keep the same text, styles and character, adapted to how eReaders actually display books.

Generally, yes. Much of the work, such as cleaning and styling the manuscript, is shared between editions, so formatting both at once avoids repeating it. We quote the combination you need and show what each additional edition adds.
