Picture book art with room for the story
We help you develop characters children recognize on every page, plan the book as a thumbnail dummy, and illustrate spreads that leave space for your words and build toward each page turn.
A young reader should know the hero on every page, from any angle, in any mood.
Pictures and words that share the page
In a picture book, the illustrations carry half the storytelling. They show what the text leaves unsaid, build anticipation toward each page turn and give young readers something new to find on every reread. That only works when art and text are planned together from the start, rather than words dropped onto finished paintings.
We begin with character design, then map the whole book as a small thumbnail dummy, spread by spread, to pace the story and decide where the text will sit. Only once the dummy is agreed does the illustrator move on to detailed sketches and, after your approval, final color artwork.
What you gain with children's book illustration
We help you develop characters children recognize on every page, plan the book as a thumbnail dummy, and illustrate spreads that leave space for your words and build toward each page turn.
Characters that stay consistent
Character sheets show each figure from several angles and with a range of expressions, so your hero looks like the same child on the final spread as on the first.
Paced with a dummy
A thumbnail dummy of the whole book shows pacing, page turns and the balance of text and image before any detailed artwork, while changes are still quick to make.
Space for your text
Each spread is composed with clear areas for type, away from the gutter and busy detail, so words stay readable without boxes covering the art.
A style matched to readers
Bold and simple, soft watercolor, or detailed and playful: we help you choose an illustration style that suits your story and the age of its audience.
From first read to final file
You are kept informed at every stage, and nothing moves forward without your approval.

Characters and dummy

- 3
Sketches
Each spread is drawn as a detailed pencil sketch for you to review, with the number of feedback rounds agreed in advance.

Find Your Illustrator
It only takes a minute.
Keep description in the text light, and add brief illustration notes only where the art must show something the words do not, such as a visual twist. Leaving room for the illustrator usually produces a richer book and a tighter text.
It is a miniature version of the whole book, drawn roughly, spread by spread. It shows where each line of text falls, how the page turns build suspense and how scenes vary in scale. It is the cheapest stage at which to change the shape of the book.
Character sheets are agreed before any spreads are drawn, showing proportions, clothing, colors and expressions. The illustrator refers to them throughout, and we check each sketch against them, so a character does not quietly change height or hairstyle between pages.
The rights arrangement is agreed in writing before work starts. An illustrator may license the artwork to you for the book and its promotion or transfer the copyright, and some arrangements include credit or royalty terms. You will know exactly what you hold before committing.
Picture books take months rather than weeks, because character design, the dummy, sketches and final color each need time and review. The schedule depends on the illustrator, the style and the number of spreads, and we confirm it in writing with your quote.
