An ISBN is simple to get right at the start and awkward to fix afterwards.
Small numbers with lasting consequences
An ISBN identifies one specific edition of one book. The paperback, hardcover, eBook and audiobook are separate products, and a significant revision usually counts as a new edition. Whoever registers the ISBN appears as the publisher in book trade databases, which is why many independent authors choose to obtain their own.
Where you get them depends on where you live. In the United States ISBNs are issued by Bowker, in the United Kingdom by Nielsen, and in many countries they are free through a national agency. We do not issue ISBNs. We guide you through the process, help you complete the records and check the barcode before it goes to print.
What you gain with isbn & barcode guidance
We explain where to obtain ISBNs in your country, how many you need, how to register each edition correctly, and how to place a scannable barcode on your back cover.
The right source
We point you to the official ISBN agency for your country and explain the difference between buying a single ISBN, buying a block, or using a free platform-assigned identifier.
One number per format
We plan which ISBN goes on which edition, so your paperback, hardcover and eBook are recorded separately while still being linked as the same work.
Accurate records
Title, contributor, imprint, format and price fields in the ISBN record are completed carefully, since retailers and libraries may draw on that information for their own listings.
Scannable barcodes
We check that your EAN barcode, including any price add-on, is generated correctly, placed clear of the trim and printed at a size and contrast scanners can read.
From first read to final file
You are kept informed at every stage, and nothing moves forward without your approval.
- 1
Review your formats
We list every edition you plan to publish, now and later, and work out how many ISBNs you need and whether a block makes sense.
- 2
Obtain the numbers
We guide you through applying to your national ISBN agency in your own name or imprint, so the records list you as the publisher.
- 3
Assign and register
Each ISBN is matched to a specific format, and we help you complete the title records with consistent details before publication.
- 4
Barcode and check
We generate or check the barcode for each print edition, confirm it matches the ISBN on the copyright page, and place it on the cover.
One book, every edition
Most authors publish in more than one format. We prepare each edition to its own technical standard, from the same approved text.

Not always. Some platforms offer a free identifier, which suits certain plans. The catch is that the platform may then appear as the publisher in trade records, and that identifier may not be usable elsewhere. We explain the trade-off for the route you are taking.
We guide you to obtain ISBNs from your national agency in your own name, which keeps you listed as the publisher. If you would rather we handle the application on your behalf, we discuss what that involves and confirm it in writing first.
Yes, if you assign an ISBN to the eBook it must be different from the print editions, because each format is a separate product. Some eBook platforms do not require an ISBN at all, which we take into account when planning your numbers.
Correcting typos usually does not. Substantial changes to content, a new title, a change of format or trim size, or a change of publisher typically do. Agencies publish their own guidance, and we help you apply it to your specific changes.
It is a small five-digit code printed beside the main barcode, sometimes used to encode the retail price, particularly in the US market. Not every book needs one. We explain whether it is expected in your markets and make sure it is formatted correctly.
