Overview

Small choices that shape the finished book

A paperback is judged physically before a single line is read. Trim size signals genre: a thriller in a compact format, a literary novel in a slightly wider trade size, a workbook in something larger. Cream paper is easier on the eye for long fiction, while white suits nonfiction with charts or photographs.

Those choices also affect page count, spine width and unit cost, so they are best made together. We talk through the options, prepare interior and cover files to the exact specification, then order and check a proof copy before you approve. You can print on demand, order a short run, or do both.

Why it matters

What you gain with paperback publishing

We help you choose a trim size, paper and cover finish that suit your genre, prepare print-ready files, and set up print-on-demand or a short run so your paperback arrives as intended.

01

Genre-appropriate specs

We recommend trim sizes and paper stock that match comparable titles in your genre, so your book looks familiar to the readers browsing alongside it.

02

Accurate cover dimensions

Spine width is calculated from your final page count and paper choice, with bleed and safe zones built in, so no text sits too close to the fold or trim.

03

Print-on-demand or short run

Print-on-demand avoids stock and storage, while a short run can lower the cost per copy for events and direct sales. We explain the trade-offs for your plans.

04

Proof before approval

We review a physical proof for margins, image quality, cover color and spine alignment, then list anything to correct before the paperback is made available to order.

How it works

From first read to final file

You are kept informed at every stage, and nothing moves forward without your approval.

  1. 1

    Choose the specs

We look at your genre, page count and budget, then agree trim size, paper color and cover finish before any design work begins.

  2. 2

    Prepare the files

Your interior is typeset to the agreed size with proper margins and gutter, and the cover is built to the exact spine and bleed measurements.

  3. 3

    Order a proof

A proof copy is ordered so we can check pagination, image reproduction, cover color and spine position on the real printed book.

  4. 4

    Approve and publish

Once corrections are made and you approve the files, we help you release the paperback through print-on-demand or arrange a short-run order.

Formats

One book, every edition

Most authors publish in more than one format. We prepare each edition to its own technical standard, from the same approved text.

FAQ

Questions about paperback publishing

Ask us something else

It depends on genre and page count. Many novels use sizes around 5 by 8 or 5.5 by 8.5 inches, while nonfiction and workbooks often go larger. We look at comparable titles and recommend a size that looks at home in your category.

Neither is better in every case. Matte feels soft and understated and is popular for literary fiction and nonfiction, though it can show scuffs. Gloss makes colors stand out and wipes clean, which suits children's books and bright genre covers. We can show you examples of both.

Spine width depends on the final page count and the paper you choose, so any change to the interior, even a few extra pages of acknowledgments, alters it. We calculate the spine only once the interior is final to avoid repeated cover adjustments.

Print-on-demand prints each copy as it is ordered, so there is no stock to store. A short run means paying upfront for a batch, which can reduce the cost per copy if you sell directly. Many authors use print-on-demand for retail and a small run for events.

The cost depends mainly on whether your interior and cover still need designing or only adapting to print specifications, and on page count. Printing costs are separate and come from the printer or platform. We quote our part in writing first.
