Why eBooks need their own attention
An eBook is not a PDF of the print edition. In a reflowable file the reader controls the font, size and margins, so page numbers disappear, line breaks move and anything positioned by hand can collapse. Tables, drop caps, scene breaks and images all need building in a way that survives those changes.
Fixed-layout files suit picture books, cookbooks and heavily designed pages, but they behave differently and are not supported equally everywhere. We can, but we would rather work from your Word file or the typesetting source, because text extracted from a PDF often carries hyphenation, running headers and line breaks that need cleaning out. If the PDF is all you have, we will tell you what extra cleanup is involved.
Most novels, memoir and text-led nonfiction should be reflowable, as it gives readers the most comfortable experience on any device. Fixed-layout is better when the design is part of the content, as in illustrated children's books, cookbooks or photo-heavy guides.
Practice varies by platform and country. Some retailers do not require an ISBN for an eBook, while wider distribution and library channels often do. We explain the options for your situation, and our ISBN guidance service covers this in more detail.
eBooks are easy to update. We correct the source file, rebuild and revalidate the EPUB, and you upload the new version through your account. Keeping one clean master file makes those future corrections quick and avoids introducing new errors.
A straightforward novel is usually quicker than a nonfiction title with tables, endnotes and images, and fixed-layout files take longest of all. Once we have seen your final manuscript, we confirm the timeline and price in writing.
